Michelle D. McKnight is a Math Interventionist for the Manchester Public School district. Michelle has 18 years of experience working in education and her master’s degree in Education from Cambridge College. She has participated in a Math Program Cohort at UCONN, has attended the Central Connecticut State University Writing Project, and will be awarded a writing fellowship in the spring of 2019. She has spoken at several conferences on the importance of Social Justice Mathematics.
Michelle is a social justice activist that strives for equity in education. She is the chairperson of EMAC, the Ethnic Minority Affairs Commission, and is an advocate for the Manchester community through leading discussions around race. She became inspired to join the RE·Center’s Board after witnessing the transformative equity work happening at the former camp program her students were attending over the years. She admired the staff’s commitment to changing the world around us by engaging students’ voices.
As a public educator, she sees the impact inequitable education has on students of color. Michelle believes that RE·Center’s dedication to being change agents in restructuring public education for children of color and those who have been marginalized and validating student voices can cause the needed shifts of granting more equitable opportunities to all stakeholders.
Michelle has many interests, such as taking walks, hiking, yoga, working out, swimming, dance, travel, reading, writing, and coloring. She also pursues peace and happiness through meditation. Michelle would like to be thought of as a fierce champion for students of color.
